Abstract

Purpose : This study aims to investigate the impact of high school students' experiences of contact with the disabled students at school on their awareness and interest in the disabled and the impact on the evaluation of the benefits of a visual impairment experience program. Methods : A survey was conducted targeting non-disabled high school students (176 students) regarding their awareness and interest in people with disabilities and their contact experiences in school life. After conducting an experience program using visual impairment experience equipment, an additional survey regarding disability experience was conducted. For data analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, frequency analysis, and multiple regression analysis methods were used through IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0. Results : It was confirmed that there was an overall positive perception in the detailed items related to ‘awareness and interest in the disabled’ and ‘evaluation of the benefit of the visual impairment experience program’. The higher the respondent's grade and the respondent's experience of living with disabled students in class, the more positive their perception of disabled people was. It was confirmed that the more positive the ‘perception of the disabled’, the higher the interest in the disabled. The older the respondent's age and grade, the more positive the evaluation of the visually impaired experience program, and the more positive the evaluation of the visually impaired experience program was for respondents who had no experience living in a class with a disabled students. Conclusion : Non-disabled students' awareness of and interest in the disabled was overall positive, and applying the visual impairment experience program to students with little experience of contact with the visual impairment helps to increase awareness and interest in the disabled.
