Analysis of the Correlation between Communication Competency of Prospective Optometrists and Their Awareness of the Optometrist Code of Ethics
Abstract
Purpose : This study analyzes the correlation between Optometry students' communication competence and their awareness of the Optometrists' Code of Ethics, aiming to provide foundational data for developing educational programs to strengthen core competencies of future optometrists. Methods : In this study, general characteristics, educational experiences, and educational needs of 98 Optometry students were analyzed using frequencies and percentages. Volunteer experiences within the past year and ethical value awareness were analyzed using the Chisquare test. Additionally, the correlation between communication competence and awareness of the Optometrists' Code of Ethics was analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results : Regarding educational experience, 77.55% reported having received communication training, 86.73% professional ethics education, and 81.63% acknowledged the necessity of communication competence training. Analysis of volunteer experiences over the past year showed a significant association with the statement "I can explain diligence in our society" (χ2= 27.91, p=0.032). Additionally, correlation analysis between the Opticians' Code of Ethics and communication competence showed the strongest correlation (r=0.71, p<0.001) between the statements "Opticians should maintain dignity and demonstrate a spirit of service" and "I can explain factors hindering effective communication." Conclusion : In this study, the necessity of enhancing communication competence and establishing professional ethics grounded in integrity among future optometrists was confirmed. Significant correlations between volunteer experience and ethical value awareness, as well as between communication competence and the Optometrists' Code of Ethics, indicate the need to systematically develop extracurricular programs targeting diverse student groups and establish an effective educational system.
