A Study on Eye Health, Cognitive Function and Depression Levels among Community-Dwelling Elderly
Abstract
Purpose : This study evaluated eye health, visual function, cognitive function, and depression levels among community-dwelling elderly adults and analyzed cognitive function differences according to sociodemographic characteristics and correlations among cognitive subdomains. Methods : Twenty elderly participants aged 60 years and older from a senior welfare center in Y city, Gyeonggi Province, were recruited. Eye health and visual function were assessed using self-report questionnaires, cognitive function was evaluated using the Cognitive Impairment Screening Test(CIST), and depression was measured using the Geriatric Depression Scale-Korean version(GDS-K). Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman correlation analysis. Results : Eye health levels showed favorable scores at 4.03±1.11 points and visual function at 4.21±1.06 points; however, eye fatigue was relatively lower at 3.70±1.17 points and dryness at 3.65±1.27 points. Cognitive function showed no significant differences by age but significant differences by education level in total scores, attention, and language function. Mean cognitive function scores by education were: no education 21.63±5.01, 1~6 years 18.40±4.50, and 7~12 years 27.29±2.81 points. All cognitive subdomains showed positive correlations, with language function demonstrating significant correlations with all other domains. Conclusion : An integrated approach including eye health management and customized programs considering education levels are necessary for promoting cognitive health among community-dwelling elderly adults. This study can serve as foundational data for developing community-based cognitive health promotion programs.
